39th Sanremo Historic Rally: Franco Cunico extend his leadership in the morning of Sunday
The driver from Vicenza resumed his ride by winning two of the three special stages on Sunday morning, bringing his lead to just under a minute over Da Zanche. In the meantime, the fight for the leadership of the European championship flared up, with the Hungarian Erbi winning one stage and overtaking Zippo and Lubiak.
SANREMO (IM), 20 October – A small problem, promptly solved, to the clutch pedal of his Porsche Carrera RS, prevented Franco Cunico from making en-plein in the three Sunday morning stages, paying 9″2 (eighth time) to the winner of Ghimbegna-San Romolo, which, however, did not affect the classification of the driver from Vicenza. The fact that the problem is of little importance or promptly solved is demonstrated by the fact that Cunico-Pirollo set the best time in the next San Romolo-Perinaldo SS and go back to stretching on the competition, represented mainly by Lucio Da Zanche-Daniele De Luis who took a risky choice of tyres to try the hit on the Ghimbegna-San Romolo, a chance that does not succeed to the Valtellina driver who still consolidates its position on the second step of the podium.
Third place is maintained by Eamon Kelly with Gordon Noble, BMW M3, who remain consistently among the top six in the overall standings, but must watch out for the return of Tibor Erdi-Istavn Kerek in the Ford Sierra Cosworth 4×4 who is attacking hard to make up as many points as possible against Zippo in the fight for the overall European Championship. In the three stages of the morning the Hungarian overtook Zippo and now attacks Kelly’s third place overall, first in the European Championship, having to make up 6″6 to him in the final two stages.
Fifth place for the Poles Maciej Lubiak-Grzegorz Dachowski in a BMW M3, who overtook the Audi quattro of ‘Zippo’-Nicola Arena, who with this result take the continental title in the Third Grouping, while they remain in the lead for the overall title and will then play it all in the final round at the Acropolis.
After a difficult Saturday in the demanding Subaru Legacy 4 WD, Raymond Breen, Craig’s father and twice winner of the Sanremo, emerged among the top ten overall by setting the sixth fastest time at Ghimbegna and even the third fastest time at San Romolo, taking ninth overall.
