37th Sanremo Historic Rally, 36th Coppa dei Fiori (Flowers Cup), scrutineering concluded, now the engines are ready to start
SANREMO (IM), 13 October – Checks, done. Shakedown, done. The first day of the 37th Sanremo Historic Rally and the concomitant 36th Coppa dei Fiori regularity rally ended at 6 p.m., as the sun set in the waters of the Ligurian Sea with the completion of sporting and technical scrutineering in Sanremo’s Piazzale Adolfo Rava and the Shakedown on the tarmac of San Romolo, just above Sanremo.
No surprises in terms of those admitted to the race, with 66 of the 69 entries in the Historic Rally having duly verified and 22 of the 23 entered in the regularity event, and all the big names ready to go. So it will be the Finns Ville Silvasti and Risto Pietiläinen who will be the first to leave the platform of Corso Imperatrice in Sanremo, followed by the Austrians Mats Myrsell-Esko Juntila in their Ford Sierra Cosworth, the two crews who lead the European standings in their grouping. The first Italian driver to start will be Pietro Corredig from Friuli with his wife Sonia Borghese who will have the number 12 on the doors of their BMW 2002 Ti. Italian championship leader Angelo Lombardo with Roberto Consiglio at the pace notes in the Porsche 911 Carrera RS with number 18 is to be followed by the twin car of Lucio Da Zanche and Daniele De Luis, who holds the most victories at the Sanremo, with four overall wins. Also expected is local driver Maurizio Pagella co driven by Francesco Zambelli, who has the most participations in the Ligurian race with twenty-one participations. Also present are all the regularity bigwigs, who will follow the rally on the special stages with last year’s winners, Paolo Mercattij-Francesco Giammarino leading the pack.
The 2021 edition of the Sanremo Rally Storico was won by Lucio Da Zanche-Daniele De Luis, Porsche 911 SC RS, in 1.29’52″1 ahead of Matteo Musti-Claudio Biglieri (Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.0, at 20″7) and Matteo Luise-Fabrizio Handel (Subaru Legacy 4WD, at 1’57″3).
